PROSPERITY – MORE THAN IT SEEMS

Today’s scripture: 3 John 1:2

Beloved, I wish above all things that you may prosper and be in health, even as your soul prospers.

A story was told of a little boy who, sitting on his father’s knees, said “Dad, is your soul insured?” “Why do you ask, son?” “I heard Uncle George say that you had your house insured and your life insured, but he did not believe you had thought of your soul and he was afraid you would lose it. Won’t you get it insured right away?” This father-son conversation seemingly rang true because it led this father to seek the divine guarantee of his soul’s well being.

To the average man, prosperity may easily depict an image of luxuriant or opulent living. But the truth is, divine prosperity transcends material acquisitions and whatever tangible proofs of increase there might be; it encompasses spiritual, mental, physical and emotional well being. It is God’s intent that we prosper in every way. What is financial abundance without physical, mental or emotional health? This is what separates divine prosperity from that which the world makes available. It is a holistic package.

Whilst the blessings of the covenant will manifest in the physical expansion of our estates, we must also bear in mind that the abundance in the physical should be and is a reflection of the total well being of our spirits and souls. In other words, our spiritual, mental, and emotional prosperity must precede material prosperity if it is to be sustainable. Worldly wealth is often subjected to cycles of booms and busts. But no matter how much material loss a prosperous soul suffers, it will get it back again, and much more. So take heed to the prosperity of your soul.

God is ready to prosper you financially, But to primarily pursue material prosperity will amount to putting the cart before the horse. The salvation of our souls, and subsequent spiritual growth, must remain our paramount pursuit. This is what Jesus meant by seeking first the kingdom of God. So let us make a renewed commitment to the renewing of our minds and the prosperity of our souls by the steady consumption of the Word of God. God Himself laid this foundation when He said to Joshua, “This book of the law shall not depart from your mouth, but you shall meditate on it day and night, that you may observe to do all that is written in it. For then you will make your way prosperous and then, you will have good success” (Joshua 1:8).

Perhaps in reading this you have come to the realisation that you are yet to accept Jesus as your personal Lord and Saviour. Do not worry; you can do it right now. Stop and ask Him to come into your heart. As you strive relentlessly towards the continued prosperity of your soul, your material prosperity is guaranteed, in Jesus’ name.

Prayer/ Confession

Father, sanctify my soul with the truth of Your Word and grant me the Spirit of wisdom and revelation that I may know You more, in Jesus’ name.
