GOD DOES NOT CHANGE

Today’s scripture: James 1:17

Every good gift and every perfect gift is from above, and comes down from the Father of lights, with whom there is no variation or shadow of turning

The Treaty of Non-Aggression between Germany and the Soviet Union, also known as the Molotov-Ribbentrop Pact, was signed in 1939, preceding the Second World War. The Treaty, a non-aggression pact, pledged both nations to remain neutral in the event that either nation was attacked by a third party. The Treaty however contained certain secret agreements that saw both nations dividing Northern and Eastern Europe into German and Soviet Union spheres of influence. But whatever there was to the treaty was shattered on the 22nd of June, 1941, when Hitler spurned the covenant and ordered the invasion of the Soviet Union.

Treaties are the highest documents drawn up to articulate human commitment to given promises and assurances. But important as they are, they are only as strong as the fickle nature of humans. The courts are consistently flooded with plethora of cases where parties to a contract have defaulted on some level; whether wilfully or by implication. The truth is, humans are liable to change, and so woe is he that puts his trust in the arm of flesh. Even in the presence of an intention to act, man is still subject to circumstances beyond his control. Like the saying goes, man at best is still man. God on the other hand never changes and knows no variation. He remains consistent in His love and maintains fidelity to His covenant through the ages.

This is very comforting; comforting to know that God will not stop loving us tomorrow; comforting to know that He will not suddenly lack the capacity to fulfil His promises to us; comforting to know that He will never change. So as we navigate the changing landscape of life, we can confidently anchor our hopes on the unchanging God. We have nothing to worry about. God will not fail us. He has cut an everlasting covenant with us; He will not go back on His Word. We alone can extricate ourselves from God’s love and covenant. But I trust we are wiser than that. Let us abide in His love by abiding in His Word. He will do us good. Go out today rejoicing in this truth. However fervently the changing storms of life may blow, we have an unchanging God whose unchanging Word and promises will never waver. Let us take comfort and courage in this, and meet life today. We will be victorious, in Jesus’ name!

Meditate and Memorize:

God is not a man, that he should lie; neither the son of man, that he should repent: hath he said, and shall he not do it? or hath he spoken, and shall he not make it good”

Prayer/Confession:

Father I thank You because Your ways are perfect and Your love is eternal. You never change. I trust Your Word. I trust Your promises.  I know that You will never leave me or forsake me, in Jesus’ name! Amen.
