Am I My Brother’s Keeper?

Pastor Jimmy Odukoya @ Sunday service

Pastor Jimmy, while ministering at the April 12 Sunday service on the message he titled, “Am I My Brother’s Keeper?” dealt with the issue of spiritual individualism, a self-contained expression of faith that avoids responsibility for others. According to him, while Christianity requires a personal relationship with God rooted in intimacy, it must not become a private experience that withdraws from people.

Drawing from Genesis 4:9, Romans 14:7, and 1 John 3:14–15, he explained that true Christianity is evidenced by its impact on others. He further explained that being Spirit-filled is not merely a declaration but a demonstration, noting that when God blesses individuals, it is so they can become a blessing to others. He also pointed out that God is concerned not only with the act of giving but the heart behind it, and that genuine love for God is expressed through love for others, not by titles or affiliations. “The potency of your Christianity is what you do to someone you don’t expect anything from,” he said.

He warned against becoming so occupied with working for God that one neglects a relationship with Him. He added that religion without compassion mirrors Cain’s attitude, and that compassion serves as the bridge between recognising a need and taking action. He reminded the congregation that everything they have is a resource, while God remains the ultimate source, and that as they minister to others, God ministers to them in return.

He concluded by cautioning that silence in the face of need or injustice can lead to complacency. He outlined practical ways to care for others: responding with prayer as a form of spiritual intervention (Ephesians 6:18), speaking up for others (Proverbs 31:8), and offering practical help (1 John 3:17). He affirmed that through Christ’s sacrifice, believers are empowered to be their brother’s keeper. “As Christians, we must respond with prayer, advocacy, and practical help for all of God’s people,” he said.

Earlier in the service, Pastor Toluwani encouraged the congregation with the promise of the week, taking from Deuteronomy 28:9-10, assuring that the Lord will establish His people as holy and make His name evident upon them as they walk in obedience.
