THE COVENANT OF PROSPERITY

Today’s scripture: Jeremiah 17:8

For he will be like a tree planted by the water, that extends its roots by a stream, and will not fear when the heat comes; but its leaves will be green and it will not be anxious in a year of draught nor cease to yield fruit.

A wealthy man once called his faithful assistant to his office and said, “I have put your name in my will and you will get $10,000 when I die. As it may be sometime before you get that legacy, I want to make you happy by paying you each year the legal interest on that amount. Here is a check of $600 as a starter.” The clerk was doubly gratified. The prospect of the inheritance was good news, and the money he received in advance assured him of the reality of a prosperous future. Many would be stupefied with joy if they found themselves in the same position as the clerk in the preceding anecdote.

The thought of receiving an inheritance that guarantees our financial security now, and for many years to come, is quite gratifying, most especially when we seem undeserving or unqualified for it. Now what passes for a fleeting fantasy in the minds of many is actually the reality of the Christian experience. God has bequeathed to us an inheritance of inestimable value. Not just something we have access to in the sweet by and by, but something available to us here and now; something sealed by covenant, ratified by the blood of His dear Son. Our prosperity today and tomorrow, is guaranteed by the covenant.

There has been an avalanche of messages on prosperity in recent times, and as with anything else, some of it has been subject to abuse. As a result, messages that deal with the material prosperity of Christians is received with suspicion by some. But whatever the aversions may be, they cannot negate the truth that God is desirous of our overall wellbeing, including our finances, He has also made provisions for it in the covenant. Psalm 35:27 makes it quite clear that God takes pleasure in the prosperity of His servants.

David clearly understood this when he stated succinctly, “The Lord is my shepherd, I shall not want.” This is the promise of the covenant. We shall not want! The Lord will supply all our needs according to His riches in glory in Christ Jesus. Rather than embrace lack as piety, let us create an expectation for abundant provision as it is indeed our privilege in the covenant. Let us refuse to shy away from the attendant financial blessings of the covenant. Let us carry on our daily activities conscious of our privileges in the covenant. Know for certain, today, that you will not lack. God desires your prosperity, and you will prosper, in Jesus’ name.

Memorise & Meditate

“For you know the grace of our Lord Jesus Christ, that though He was rich, yet for your sakes He became poor, that you through His poverty might become rich.” 2 Corinthians 8:9

Prayer/Confession:

Father, I thank You because the blessings of Your covenant daily prevail in my life. I am prosperous in all my dealings, abounding in every good work and showing forth your glory, in Jesus’ name. Amen.
