ESCHEWING TRADITION

Today’s scripture: Matthew 15:2c

…Thus you have made the commandment of God of no effect by your tradition.

From 1900 to 1967, the Swiss were the leading watch makers in the world. In 1967, when digital technology was patented, the Swiss rejected it in favour of the traditional ball bearings, gears and main springs they had been using to make watches for decades. Unfortunately, the world was ready for change, and Seiko, a Japanese company picked up the digital patent and instantly became the leading watch manufacturer in the world.

Fifty thousand of the 67,000 Swiss watch makers went out of business because they turned their backs on new technology. It was not until years later that the Swiss caught up and regained their position in the market place with the creation of Swatch watches.

It was Bill Clinton who said, “The price of doing the same old thing is far higher than the price of change.” Most often, this is true. Nothing blinds us to the possibilities change holds than the present benefits of existing tradition. It was tradition that locked millions of Jews out of God’s salvation plan. God was doing a new thing, but they were stuck in the old. Tradition in itself is not evil, but holding on to it tenaciously to the detriment of God’s will could have an adverse effect.

Keep an open mind with regards to tradition. The only unchanging factor is the Word of God; everything else is subject to change. God is always doing something new, some of it will go against tradition; all of it will favour you. So today, do not let tradition be a hindrance to what God has in store for you. Remain pliable in the face of change. You will win, in Jesus’ name.

Meditate and Memorize:

Behold, I will do a new thing. Now it shall spring forth; shall you not know it? I will even make a road in the wilderness and rivers in the desert. Isaiah 43: 19

Prayer/Confession:

Father I thank you because you have caused all things to work in my favour. Thank you because by Your Spirit I discern the perfect will of God and I move with the seasons of change into my larger harvest in Jesus Name. Amen.
