An Attitude of Gratitude

Today’s scripture: Psalms 34:1

I will bless the Lord at all times, His praise shall continually be in my mouth”

Contemporary motivational guru, Zig Ziglar, was arguably the most loved and sought after speaker of his time. Each time an audience heard Zig speak, they experienced a burst of energy, vitality and joy. As a matter of fact, Zig was known to answer his calls with such infectious gusto, leaving people in the waking wonder of what the secret to his boisterous nature was; especially when considering that he started out really poor. His father died when he was six years old, leaving his mother to cater for eleven children all alone, and even when Zig and Jean Ziglar lost their daughter, Zig refused to languish in despair but rather chose to count his blessings. He credited his gallant expression of optimism and gratitude to his mother. He was often found to say that “without instilling in our children the attitude of saying thank you, we will raise ungrateful children who are highly discontent.” Little wonder he coined the phrase “Have an attitude of gratitude because the more you are grateful for the things you have, the more things you will have to express gratitude for.”

Zig Ziglar couldn’t have been more right. Gratitude must be an attitude. Research has proven that an attitude of gratitude positively affects our psychological, emotional and physical well being. Adults who keep a grateful attitude demonstrate more energy, optimism, and are generally more sociable than those who are more grumpy than grateful.

In an upcoming paper in the Journal of Happiness Studies, Froh and colleagues surveyed 1,035 high school students and their findings reflected that the most grateful students had more friends and higher GPAs. We should not go from giving thanks in church to complaining about anything and everything. We cannot afford not to make gratitude a habit. Thanksgiving is the attitude of champions. It is the language of victory. It is the responsibility of the believer. Determine today, more than ever, to give thanks always, to make gratitude an attitude. The Holy Spirit will empower you, in Jesus’ Name.

 Meditate and Memorize:

“Therefore by Him, let us continually offer the sacrifice of praise to God. That is the fruit of our lips, giving thanks to His name.” Hebrews 13:15

 Prayer/ Confession:

Father I thank You for Your grace and mercy in my life. Thank You for the many gifts You have bestowed on me. I choose to stay grateful and conscious of Your goodness to me in every situation I find myself in Jesus’ Name. Amen.
