WHAT ARE YOU LIVING FOR

It is sadistic and worrisome to know that a large number of young people outside there had one time or the other suffered from one form of abuse or the other, the greatest of which is self abuse. The effect is seen in the increasing rate of rape cases, child labour, robbery and ritual killings of young people, we see on our television and newspaper headlines daily.

This menacing issue can be attributed to the lack of adequate knowledge and understanding of purpose because where purpose is not known abuse is inevitable.

What then is abuse? Abuse, simply put is the abnormal use or ill treatment of a person or a thing. Therefore to overcome whatever form of abuse you are suffering from, you need to constantly ask yourself this question over and over again; what am I living for?

What are you living for? What would you be remembered for? Or rather what would be your contribution to the development of mankind or humanity after your exit from the surface of the earth, these were the series of questions, someone asked me some years back when I was just a teenager in my final year at secondary school. It was quite shocking that at that age and period of my life, I had no clue or answer to the above questions which I was asked by a fellow student and classmate. At the end of that discussion, it dawned on me that I was merely existing and not living but looking back at those days; I cannot but thank God for that person because those questions caused a paradigm shift of my focus in life and had contributed immensely to my achievement so far.

Therefore, I’ve come to realize that dying young is not the worst thing that can happen to a man in life but to live without discovering and fulfilling the purpose for which you were created  is the greatest evil that can befall any man. Permit me to say here that, it is one thing to discover what you are living for; it is another to fulfill the purpose for which you were born.

It is then pertinent to say at this junction that not until you are able to answer those questions, you are considered as merely existing and not living because life begins when we start living according to the purpose for which we were created by God. Give it a thought and find answer to these questions.

In conclusion, I challenge you to find answers to those questions and move from merely existing to living a purpose driven life and also join the lineage of heroes such as Albert Einstein, Micheal Faraday, Bimbo Odukoya and Martin Luther King Jnr. Who have, in their own way contributed immensely to the development of mankind?

Now this exercise might seem spooky, but it’s essential to complete it if you are serious about being the very best you can be. I want you to write out your own eulogy.

In the space below, record how you want to be remembered. Then study it, and decide how close you are to being that kind of person. Ask yourself what you can do, starting from today, to be the person you are writing about.
